Corporate Social Responsibility: Top Ten Companies

Some companies are nicer than others, and that’s a fact. When it comes to being socially responsible, the vast majority of corporations claim to be committed to bettering the world, but the truth is that not all of them are.


The Reputation Institute recently ranked the top 100 most reputable companies with a global presence based on the companies’ corporate social responsibility reputations. Consumers were asked how much they agreed with three statements about the companies:


  1. ‘Company’ is a good corporate citizen—it supports good causes and protects the environment
  2. ‘Company’ is a responsibly-run company—it behaves ethically and is open and transparent in its business dealings
  3. ‘Company’ is an appealing place to work—it treats its employees well


The top 100 was largely dominated by high tech companies and pharmaceutical companies, and noticeably absent were oil giants and Wall Street banking and investment houses.


Microsoft came in at number one, perhaps unsurprisingly, since its founder is so dedicated to philanthropy. Google follows closely at number two, while The Walt Disney Company, BMW, and Apple fill out numbers three through five. Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) and Volkswagon (along with BMW) represent the automotive industry well, claiming the sixth and seventh spots. Sony was ranked as number eight, and the last two spots were filled out by Colgate-Palmolive and LEGO Group, respectively.


Microsoft alone has helped facilitate philanthropic giving in employees, resulting in over $1 billion of employee contributions plus Microsoft’s matching funds since 1983.


“Our CSR efforts have a direct and positive impact on people in our own backyard and around the world, and in turn, their ongoing engagement with us contributes to Microsoft’s business success,” said Microsoft’s senior director of corporate citizenship, Dan Bross.


As a whole, corporations still have a long way to go before they reach their full potential as good-doing CSR machines. Luckily, the past few years have shown that growth in philanthropic endeavors is not just possible, it’s also beneficial to everyone involved: corporations, employees, and the world.
