In the old days, if you said you were “working in the cloud,” people would say you should get your head out of it and stop daydreaming. However, these days “the cloud” has a whole new meaning – one that non-profits are catching onto due to its many benefits.
According to The Wireless Association, more than 321 million people have mobile subscriptions in the U.S. That’s more subscriptions than there are people, which means that many subscribers have more than one mobile device.
As technology has changed and evolved, it has become more prevalent in all aspects of our day. In the morning, you might go for coffee and pay using your cell phone. You need to deposit a check, so you scan it using your phone. Done. You can check your email or Twitter on your phone. We read books on devices like Kindles and Nooks. Mobile devices are getting cheaper and more user-friendly.
As prices drop, non-profits that were previously priced out of the game, are jumping in and reaching out through social media. Cloud computing gives them technological access that can lead to powerful change.
“In the past, cost kept many nonprofits from being able to invest in the hardware and software they needed to get their work done. But, today, many IT services can be ‘run in the cloud’ for pennies on the dollar (think email, storage, power to process large chunks of data, etc.). Basically, this means that nonprofits can pay a smaller fee for a service that maintains their data in a secure environment that they can access via the web, from wherever they want,” according to The Huffington Post.
The good news is this all gives us greater access to the non-profit services we need. They are able to connect with more people, and they can be more focused on getting their message across. It sure feels like a win-win.
