It was announced on Sunday that NBA China and the CBA Dongguan Basketball School will extend their partnership to an additional five years to develop elite youth talent in China.
The CBA Dongguan Basketball School, an NBA training center in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, was launched in 2011 as the first facility of its kind for Chinese basketball players between the ages of 12-17. It will continue to serve through 2021 as the NBA’s institution for developing raw basketball talent for the youth of China.
According to Dongguan Today, the school has won multiple national youth basketball tournaments in the past, including the CBA’s U17 National Tournament Championship and U13 National Championship titles.
Since the facility launched in 2011, it has trained more than 8,000 players in the area. Twenty-five NBA players and legends have visited the facility including All-Stars Derrick Rose, John Wall, Damian Lillard, and Al Horford. NBA coaches and trainers have also held basketball clinics.
“We are delighted to see our facility has become China’s benchmark for youth basketball training,” said Dongguan Leopards head coach and CBA Dongguan Basketball School Principal Li Qun. “Through this joint effort, I am confident that we are contributing significantly to the development of basketball in China.”
Basketball development is a primary focus of NBA China and the partnership with the school demonstrates their commitment to develop young basketball talent and create social responsibility programs in the country. NBA CEO David Shoemaker explains that the organization will continue to provide current and future generations of Chinese basketball players with the resources they need to succeed.
The extended partnership with CBA Dongguan Basketball School is only an addition to youth basketball development efforts in China. In February 2014, NBA China and former NBA star Yao Ming launched the NBA Yao Basketball Club to offer basketball training and fitness programs for young boys and girls of all skill levels. The program focused on using basketball to highlight the importance of teamwork, leadership, and communication in a fun environment.
