Flint, Michigan is about 70 miles from the shores of the largest group of fresh bodies of water in the world: the Great Lakes. However, its residents can’t get clean water from their taps. As you’ve probably heard, this is a major crisis still happening, where more than 90,000 residents have been exposed to toxic water. Not only did President Barack Obama declare it a federal state of emergency, members of the hip-hop community have started to get involved. Hip-hop stars, notably Meek Mill and Big Sean, have taken an interest in the situation and is offering help.

According to TMZ, Meek Mill recently donated money to the Flint Child and Family Health Development, a community foundation that focuses on long-term change for better response to the water crisis. He also sent 60,000 bottles of JUST Water to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. In addition to helping out with Flint, sources say that he’s been volunteering at local schools, giving motivational speeches, and helping out at homeless shelters in Philadelphia. Meek promises that these charitable venues have nothing to do with any court mandated community service.

Rapper Big Sean recently launched the #HealFlintKids fundraiser to benefit his Sean Anderson Foundation in response to the Flint’s toxic water crisis. In addition to donating $10,000 to the cause, he hopes others will help too:

I’m raising money to support the kids of Flint Michigan. Toxic water in Flint has rendered the water undrinkable and put the entire city in a state of emergency. Flint’s children were hit the hardest and some have experienced permanent and potentially devastating health defects from lead poisoning.

We know the needs of Flint children exposed to lead, particularly those most vulnerable – children ages 0-6 – are ongoing and long-term.  You can be assured that your gift will be used for critical interventions today and well into the future.

The Sean Anderson Foundation is raising funds on behalf of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint Michigan. Please give what you can, every donation counts. Thanks so much for your support.

Anyone who donates at least $10 to Big Sean’s fundraiser will be entered into a contest to win VIP tickets to his concert in 2016. Interested in learning more? Click here to donate.
